The Goal: Redesign the Web site for a cutting-edge scientific animation company, transforming their old site, which was built completely in Flash, into a dynamic site with a modern design that is easily updated and more search engine friendly.
The Challenge: Create a site with a high-impact design that 'doesn't look like a template,' but is as easy to update as any blog. A secondary challenge was to host hundreds of megabytes of video without blowing the bank on video hosting fees.
The Technology: This site was built with a highly-customized installation of WordPress as the Content Management System. Using WordPress as the 'engine behind the site" makes it easy to update and manage, while still being able to handle a custom design with images, videos, and more. The site uses XHTML, CSS, AJAX, and other modern technologies and was built to be search engine friendly with many automated features.
To keep video hosting cost effective without compromosing quality or copyright, we used the video host Vimeo.com and integrated their player into the the back-end administrative tools to make it easy for staff at XVIVO to add new videos to the site.
Now when their work is featured in news sources, such as NPR and ABC's Good Morning America, the spikes in traffic won't crash the site or lead to unexpected hosting fees.
