Help — the links from the template aren’t working or updating.

October 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

Hello Janine,

You don’t know me, but I know you because I’ve watched your Dreamweaver Essentials training! Your DVD is great!

I have 20 years of print design experience so I was quickly able to apply what I learned in the DVD. However, I just built a far LESS complicated site and I am having a problem with links that I didn’t have in the first site.

My pages are new from a template, and the links from the template aren’t working or updating. (They work in the template but not in the updated pages.) Used the arrow, the folder, unchecked the box in the advanced template preferences, checked the box in the advanced template preference. It didn’t change anything either way.

I ended up having to manually change all 5 links in the nav div on each of the 5 pages.

It’s no problem for this small site, but if I can’t solve this it will obviously keep me from utilizing the advantages of templates.

Can you help? Or send me to the correct place to figure it out? The Dreamweaver help site went on and on about checking or unchecking that box in the templates advanced section, but neither way made a difference.

Sincerely,
Jack

Hi Jack,

Thank you for the kind words about my videos.

You definitely should not need to reset those links manually, and doing so means you’ll likely have problems with any global updates in the future… Here are some things to double-check.

  1. Make sure you used the .dwt extension when you saved the template file you are using.
  2. Make sure you saved the template in a folder called Templates and it’s visible in the Files panel with the rest of the files in the site.
  3. Make sure the links are in an uneditable region of the template. They should only be editable in the template itself, not in the pages you create from the template. You may need to remove the editable region and then re-create it without the links enclosed if this is the case.
  4. If that was the case, you should open the template in the Templates folder, move the links so they are not in an editable region, and then reset the links to each of the pages so they are created properly in the template.
  5. Although you can apply the changes to any pages where you’ve already used the template, you may run into problems changing editable regions. If that is the case, you may need to re-create all of your pages from the corrected template. (Remember, you can move the contents of each page into the new template pages by using copy and paste.)

It may seem like more work at this stage, but setting up templates properly in the first place can save so much time in the long run that I find it’s well worth the effort.

Hope that helps and I wish you all the best,
Janine
