Can I have two versions of Dreamweaver on my computer?

October 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

Hi,

Hope you can help.

I designed a web site with pop-up menus in Dreamweaver 8. I did not use CSS.

Now I need to add items to the pop-up menu and it is not recognized in Dreamweaver 9 (CS3). Nor are the menus recognized in the way Adobe says you should be able to modify via CS3 – -probably because I do not use CSS.

Because my drive went south and had to be replaced, I never installed Dreamweaver 8 on my new drive. Do you know of any problems with installing Dreamweaver 8 once CS3 has already been installed? Can they both be on the same machine and used (not at the same time)?

Thanks for your help,
Lee from Illinois

Hi Lee,

It is definitely possible to install two different versions of Dreamweaver on the same machine — I’ve done it many times because as I’m testing and writing books for each new version, I usually still have the previous version on my computer. I’ve never installed them in reverse order, as you need to do, but it shouldn’t be a problem.

That said, I wouldn’t try to run both programs at once. Shut one version down before opening the other. You should also be aware that you can run into problems when you try to open files created or editing in one version in another, but I think you’ve already discovered that.

If you just need to make a few changes to your existing site, you should be able to open it in version 8 and work there just as you used to once you’ve reinstalled the program.

My best advice is that you make one copy of your site that you work on in version 8 and then consider saving a new copy to start redesigning your site in version CS3. That way you can use the copy to move the content from the old version of your site to the new one without risking problems in the version you may still need to work on in Dreamweaver 8.

If you use the predesigned CSS layouts in Dreamweaver CS3 and create templates to create new pages, you’ll have a new site that is easier to update in the future and one that better meets modern Web standards.

You’ll find free tutorials on CSS and templates on my Web site at www.DigitalFamily.com and you’ll find more instructions in my books and videos.

I hope that helps and I wish you all the best,
Janine
