I recently got a virus on my old computer and had to get a new computer. Somewhere in the process, my Dreamweaver MX was lost (which I had taken an adult ed course in) and I was left with Studio 8. When I went in to try to make changes to my website, it told me that my files are read-only. Also I see none of the buttons I am familiar with. With Dreamweaver MX I would check out the page I wanted, make the changes, and then “put in” and “check in.” Where are all of these properties located in Dreamweaver 8?
I appreciate any help you can give me. I did not create the website. I just took an adult ed course to learn to do basic things. And now with this computer change and program change, I am just lost.
Thanks again,
Matt
Hi Matt,
I think your first problem is the read-only files. You have a couple of options here.
If you only have a couple of files that are read-only, you can use the Save As feature to save a copy with a new name that you will then be able to edit.
If you have a lot of files, you can change the setting for all of them at once by changing the Properties settings in the folder menu of your computer. You do this by opening any folder of files and then using the menu at the top of the folder dialog to find a Properties option. In that dialog, you should find a checkbox that says Read Only. Make sure it’s NOT checked – sometimes you can make sure it’s right by checking it and then unchecking it. Apply the new setting to any subfolders and then you should be able to open, edit, and save the files as usual.
As for the challenge with upgrading from Dreamweaver MX to Dreamweaver version 8, you should be able to open and edit your files just fine in the new version once you’ve removed the read-only setting. Version 8 has many great new features, but everything you used to do should still be there.
To get back the check-in/out feature, you need to Define your site in Dreamweaver. You’ll find instructions for how to set up a site in Dreamweaver here.
You’ll also find many other tutorials there that may help you as you work on your site.
I hope that helps and I wish you all the best,
Janine
