How can I create a search function for my web site?

September 11th, 2008 · No Comments

Hey There Janine,

I feel like I know you after spending so many hours with you on the Essentials DVDs! I’ve had my Dreamweaver CS3 software and your DVDs for two weeks exactly, and I already have a website (http://www.rockinghorsevideo.com).

I wanted to create a search function (to search my pages’ content, not the web) on some of my pages. I will have many pages of thumbnails of horses and riders. Or I may use embedded AVIs, I haven’t worked it out yet. Anyway, is there some way I can make the batch of thumbnails searchable by having the riders enter their names into the search object? I bought an extension (Spry Data Utilities), but the developer told me I needed to learn it in Dreamweaver without the extension first. How frustrating! If you could point me in the direction of some tutorials, that would be great. It just doesn’t seem to me that this kind of data would be amenable to tables and form fields.

Have a great Labor Day weekend!

Kate

Hi Kate,

Cool project, creating videos of horses and their owners. Takes me back to when I was a little girl and fantasized about such things. . .

Dreamweaver has no simple “search” feature. You really have to learn rather advanced programming to create a search yourself. However, Google offers a tool you can add to your site that might just solve your problems – without the programming or the expense.

Hope that helps and I wish you all the best,
Janine
