Digital Family Album Basics

Digital Family Album BasicsThe Inspiration

My sister-in-law Stephanie enjoys creating scrapbooks with photos of her husband and kids, quotes, and other snippets of their active life. I like to snuggle into their comfortable sofa and flip through the pages when I visit. My nieces love that these special books are filled with people and stories they know.

A couple of years ago, I gave Stephanie a digital camera to help with her scrapbooking (and to get more photos of my nieces), and I was delighted to see how quickly she started taking more pictures. But as she prepared for the birth of their third child, she was getting too busy to keep up with her photo projects and I realized she could save time (and money) by doing some of her design work on a computer.

Watching how excited my nieces get when they see their own pictures in the pages of their special books, and watching their mother get too busy to keep up with them, is what inspired me to create the Digital Family Album series. Like many families, ours is spread across the country and we rarely see each other except at holidays and other special events, so photos and family stories are especially important to us.

After watching piles of old photos collect dust in our closets and waste away on our hard drives, I decided to do something to help my family stay better connected -- and then I realized other families would benefit from the same lessons. That's why I wrote Digital Family Album Basics: So you can create your own digital memories, and share them with family and friends, whether you want to send your special projects through snail mail or via the Internet!

I've written many how-to books about Web design over the years, but most of them are for people who are relatively technically savvy. Digital Family Album Basics is designed for the average family, a family like my brother and sister-in-law's--one that is more interested in photos than Photoshop, and definitely doesn't have time to master complex software programs. My goal is to help families like yours create simple, yet elegant, projects you will treasure for years to come.
